Humpy continues quest for third GM norm

Vijayawada:

Unfazed by recent reverses, world junior chess champion Koneru Humpy will continue her quest for the elusive third GM norm when she leaves for Hungary to participate in the 'Eger GM tournament' starting February 21. "I am leaving for Hungary on February 18 to take part in the Eger tournament," Humpy informed. "After that I would take part in the first Saturday GM tournament in Hungary from March 2 to 15," she added. If Humpy, born on March 31, 1987, acquires her third GM norm to be a full GM before August 26 this year, she would snatch the record for the youngest woman to have a full Grand Master status from her idol Judith Polgar of Hungary. The Andhra girl acquired her first GM norm in 2001 at the age of 14 years and 84 days. After 129 days, the queen of Indian chess won her second GM norm in the Third Saturday GM tournament held at Belgrade, Yugoslavia in October 2001. Humpy, who played in the First Saturday GM chess tournament at Budapest missed the norm by 1.5 points as she finished fourth with 7.5 points. She is currently world number four among women players with a ELO rating of 2539. (PTI)
