Dos Hermanas:

World Junior Champion P Harikrishna warmed up with an easy draw with Grandmaster Oleg Korneev of Russia in the first round of the category 16 Dos Hermanas chess tournament. Grandmaster Miguel Illescas Cordoba also started off in style defeating Cuban GM Lenier Dominguez in a fine endgame display. The other winner on the first day was the world's youngest ever GM Sergey Karjakin of Ukraine, who scored a marathon 84-moves victory over Ruben Felgaer of Argentina. Other draws The other two games of the Euros 16000 event were drawn with Azerbaijani sensation Teimour Radjabov signing peace with Zurab Azmaiparashvili of Georgia, and the winner of 2003 edition Russian Alexander Rustemov holding top seed and hot favourite compatriot Alexey Dreev. The biennial event is being played on a round-robin basis between 12 players and the winner will take home Euros 6000. However, for Harikrishna, things did not turn out as expected against Korneev. Playing the white side of a Reti opening, the Indian, who fit in as a last minute replacement to Shakhriyar Mamedyarov of Azerbaijan, did not achieve much after Korneev played cautiously in the first part of the game. As many as three pieces were traded by the 21st move itself and with nothing to play for the players signed peace one move later. (PTI)
