The All India Chess Federation will hold at least six Grandmasters tournaments in the country prior to Moscow Chess Olympiad next year.

The All India Chess Federation will hold at least six Grandmasters tournaments in the country prior to Moscow Chess Olympiad next year, its President N Srinivasan has said. Addressing a press conference here last night, the newly elected AICF President "chess has made rapid strides in the last decade and there is a lot to be done to popularise this sport and attract more youngsters to the game".With a plethora of potential world champions coming up of late, chess has boosted the morale of entire sports fraternity in the country, he said adding that "coinciding with this trend, the Federation has proposed a long term plan spanning the years from 2002 to 2006 and AICF would bid for hosting the second world cup to be held during August-September next year".Offices of all the affiliates of AICF would be computerised and a website would also be in place, he said. P T Ummer Koya, Secretary, AICF said "A sum of Rs 4 crore has been set aside this year to pay the entry fee of players for participation in international events". The FIDE charges 200 Swiss Francs per player as entry fee. (PTI)
