Mike Tyson granted license to fight, clearing the final major hurdle for the ex-champion to fight heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis in Washington in June.

Washington:

Mike Tyson was granted a license to fight by a unanimous vote of a three-member panel yesterday, clearing the final major hurdle for the ex-champion to fight heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis here in June. The District of Columbia Boxing and Wrestling Commission heard 55 speakers at a public hearing, all supporting approval of Tyson's license application, then deliberated only 15 minutes in executive session before making their verdict. Tyson, who did not appear, met with the commission for two hours last week in a private session and also underwent physical and psychiatric evaluations that were considered in rendering the decision. The Nevada Athletic Commission would not approve a license for Tyson in January after the controversial fighter touched off a brawl in New York at what was to have been the announcement of a Lewis-Tyson fight in Las Vegas in April.
