Hyderabad:

Matrimony is leading to a semi-divorce in Indian badminton. The country's top women's doubles pair of Jwala Gutta and Shruti Kurien has decided to concentrate on playing singles.Jwala is now married to India's number two player Chetan Anand and takes off to Denmark this week, while Shruti ties the knot with another badminton hand, Nikhil, next year. "The only sensible thing for me to do will be to concentrate on my singles," Shruti said.Greener pasturesJwala and Shruti have been India's Jodi Number One for the last five years, but they will come together only when the country needs them."We were at number 27 three years ago and no one knew about it. It was the first time that an Indian pair was 27. Now we are 34, which is not bad either," said Jwala.Meanwhile, Chetan, who leaves for Denmark this week with Jwala to train at the Marten Frost Academy, says the atmosphere in India is not badminton-friendly."We will get to play lots of matches there, and the exposure will be high. We will be playing among the top players," he said. When the country's top women's doubles pair in badminton says the country's attitude to doubles is disappointing and discouraging, it is perhaps an indication that there is no light at the end of the tunnel. Clearly, Indian badminton badly needs a wake-up call.
