Junior National Champion Anand Pawar has won the prestigious Wimbledon Junior (under-19) Badminton Championship.

Junior National Champion Anand Pawar has won the prestigious Wimbledon Junior (under-19) Badminton Championship, defeating Scottish No.1 Callum Menzies in straight games. In the final yesterday, Anand defeated Menzies 15-4 15-2 at the Wimbledon Squash and Badminton Club in London, according to information received here. Earlier, Anand was given a scare in the semifinals by the English No. 2 Junior Andrew Ellis before he prevailed 15-6 10-5 15-2. One of the popular junior tournaments in Europe, all top players from Europe participate in the Wimbledon Junior event. In the under-19 Girl's singles, India's Gayatri Vartak, the top under-16 player in the country, finished runner up, losing to Linda Sloan of Scotland. Gayatri had earlier defeated Helen Ward of England in the semifinal 11-5 11-5. She had upset tournaments's top seed Julie Boyt of Scotland in the previous round. The other Indians in the fray -- Samrudha Rathod and Akshay Dewalkar -- lost in the quarterfinals and Aditya Elango in the pre-quarterfinals in the Boy's Singles. G M Nischitha, India's No.2 Sub-Junior, lost a close match in the girls' quarterfinals. Pawar will now join the ongoing camp for Indian players here for the coming World Junior Championships.
