Indians in 3rd round in Richmond

New Delhi:

Jishnu Sanyal and Aparna Balan were the only Indians to survive as all other shuttlers in the fray were made to bite the dust on the opening day of the World Junior Badminton Individual championship at Richmond, Canada. The unseeded Sanyal upset ninth seed Han Chou Chu of Chinese Taipei 15-8 11-15 15-4 in the boy's second round while Balan got the better of Germany's Janet Koehler 11-4 5-11 11-1 to move into the third round of girl's singles. Sanyal will now take on Vladimir Malkov of Russia while Balan, who defeated Maja Savor of Crotia 13-11 11-5 in the first round, will meet Mayu Sekiya of Japan in the next round. Forgettable day But the opening day of the individual championship was otherwise a forgettable day for the Indian shuttlers as no one could cross the second round hurdle. Tenth seed Anand Pawar, Sagar Chopda and P Kashyap, after getting first round bye, went down tamely. Pawar was upset by Tommy Sugiarto of Indonesia 6-15 6-15 in just 31 minutes while Sagar Chopda went down to fourth seed Jung Wong Hwang of Korea 5-15 5-15 and Kashyap gave a walkover to sixth seed Chen Tianyu of Chinese Taipei. In the girl's event also the Indians failed to raise their level as Sayali Gokhale and Saina Nehwal were shown the door in the second round while Vaidehi Dave went out in the first round itself.
