The Asian Satellite Badminton Championship in Hyderabad presents India with an opportunity to usher in the feel-good factor for Indian badminton. However, sadly the tournament hasn't lived up to its billing of an Asian level event with most countries choosing to give it a skip. There is no Korea, no Malaysia and Indonesia has not sent any of its senior players. In effect, this Asian championship is only as good as the national championship. "It's a very small tournament. The top badminton players do not participate in these kind of tournaments," says Jwala Gutta, Player. So the players are using the championship with $10,000 prize money to notch up important points and move up the ranking ladder. "Our ranking is not so high in the world. So if we win small tournaments or reach the semis or the finals, we get good points and our ranking improves," explains Chetan Anand, National Champion, India. While India will have precious little to gain from this three-day event, players from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal are looking forward to net a few good wins. "We have very less international exposure. We have come here for that. We will try to play well," says Umar Zeeshan, National Champion, Pakistan. Hyderabad will be eager to watch local hero Pullela Gopichand. Injury has kept Gopi out of action for many months now and a win here might well be his comeback vehicle.
