Indian athletes failed to shine on the Asian team as both shot putter Navpreet Singh and middle distance runner Pinki Pramanik finished seventh in their respective events at the IAAF World Cup.Pinki could not capitalise on a slow two-lap race and got stuck in the racing pack for a long time.She had been in splendid form in the current season with five gold medals on the Asian Grand Prix circuit in May as well as a 400-800 m double at the South Asian Games in Colombo.Zulia Calatayud of Cuba won the race for the Americas (2:00.06), beating season leader Janeth Jepkosgei of Kenya by just 0.03 seconds while Russian Olga Kotlyarova took third place with 2:00.84.Pinki threatened her personal best of 2:03.23, but missed it by 0.05 seconds to finish seventh.Shot putIn the men's shot put, Navpreet Singh heaved the iron to a distance of 18.43 m to finish way down the standings in seventh place at the Athens Olympic Stadium.Navpreet's first throw was his best and he followed it with efforts of 18.23 m, 18.21 m and 18.05 m. German Ralf Bartels took the top honours for Europe with an effort of 20.67 m, edging out favourite Reese Hoffa of the United States who could manage 20.60 m. Pavel Sorin of Russia took third place with 20.45 m.Hoffa had registered a throw of 22.11 m this year while Bartels had managed 21.43 m. (PTI)
