Helsinki: The World Athletic Championships began in Helsinki on Saturday and the first of the Indians to take to the field failed to qualify for the final of his event. Vikas Gowda registered a throw of 62.04m to finish ninth in his qualifying group. The next Indian to compete will be Neelam Jaswant Singh whose qualifying round in the discus throw event starts later today.Meanwhile, the first medal of the championships was won by Jefferson Perez. The Ecuadorian retained the title he won two years ago in Paris in the men's 20km walk. In the other two finals on Saturday, Tirunesh Dibaba led a clean sweep of the medals for Ethiopia in the women's 10,000m event. Briton Paula Radcliffe came in ninth. American Adam Nelson won the men's shot put event with a season's best throw.
