New Delhi:

With just a little over three months remaining for Athens Olympics, top Indian athletes have moved into top gear.A 30-member team of athletes will train and participate in four competitions in Ukraine over the next one-and-a-half months.Competing at an international level will give these athletes an opportunity to test themselves against some world-class opposition."If you compete with good athletes, your own performance improves. It feels slightly odd to compete with world-class athletes at the Olympics or at the World Championships. But if we get used to that level on the European circuit itself, then we are able to perform better," said discus thrower Neelam J SinghChance to qualifyWhile seven of the 30 members have already qualified for the Olympics, the competitions in Ukraine will give rest of them a chance to make it to Athens. The Athletics Federation of India is hopeful that at least 20 more athletes will qualify for the big event. "I feel that almost all the athletes we are sending should qualify for Athens. We should have the same number of athletes as in Sydney. And their performances will also be good," said Lalit Bhanot, Secretary, Athletics Federation of India.India has a very poor record at the Olympics. In the last six Olympiads, the country has managed to win only one gold and two bronze medals. But for the athletes, this August will be a new start, and a fresh opportunity for an elusive Olympic medal.
