Hendrick Ramala wins Mumbai Marathon
Hendrick Ramala of South Africa and Violletta Uryga of Poland won the $210,000 prize money Standard Chartered Mumbai International full marathon.

Hendrick Ramala of South Africa and Violletta Uryga of Poland won the $210,000 prize money Standard Chartered Mumbai International full marathon (42 km) in men and women events, in contrasting styles. Ramala let the pacemaker do most of the running in the initial stages before going all out after crossing the hill to win in 2:15.47 hours. Julies Sugut of Kenya, with a timing of two hours 16.36 minutes, finished second while Luica Tomobo of Tanzania with a timing of 2:16.50 hours finished third in the men's section. In the women's section, Violletta Uryga made it a start to finish affair and won in 2:47.53 hours. Judith Nagy of Hungary with a timing of 2:49.50 hours finished second while Natalia Salushka Gilufumo of Belarus, who clocked 2:50.24 hours, finished third. It marked a new chapter for sports in Mumbai as the city joined New York and London in the bracket of elite marathon hosts. Up to 17,000 people took part in the marathon. Three races of varying distances a€" 42 km, 21 km and 7 km - were held in which the prize money amounted to more than $200,000. Raj Kumar from Pune won the half marathon (21 km). Celebrities don running shoes The Standard Chartered Mumbai International Marathon (SCMIM), billed as the richest prize money event in Asia, was flagged off by Maharashtra Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde. A host of celebrities from India and around the world joined the Mumbai Marathon which hopes to raise Rs 50 lakh in charity. Industrialists like Anil Ambani and film stars, including Kajol participated in the half marathon (21 km) and Dream Run (7 km) respectively. The elite runners who took part in the Dream Run included world long jump record holder Mike Powell of USA, former long distance runner Josiah Thugwane of South Africa, former 200 and 400 metres Olympic champion Michael Johnson of USA, former long distance runner Richard Nerurkar and former cross country world champion Paul Tergat of Kenya. Dino Morea, Tara Sharma, Puru Raj Kumar, Jackie Shroff and his son Tiger, Rahul Bose, Pooja Bedi, Sita Thompson, Tanuja, Tanisha Mukherji, Aryan Vaid, Mandira Bedi, Jessie Randhawa, Moshe Shek, Sudha Chandran and John Abraham were among the notable participants in the event.
