Mexico's Ana Guevara won the women's 400 meters a the Wrld Athletics Final today, ending Olympic champion Toique Williams-Darling's unbeaten streak and aenging her loss to the Bahamian at the Athens Games. Williams-Darling had not lost a race, or even a heat, since March and was looking for an 11th straight race victory. But Guevara, the reigning world champion and runner-up behind Williams-Darling in Athes, went out quickly and won in 50.30 seconds. Williams-Darling could not match the early pace, fell away in the stretch and finished sixth, more than a second back. American Monique Hennagan took second in 50.20, with compatriot DeeDee Trotter third in 50.60. Williams-Darling could only manage 51.44. "I won't be unhappy just because one race didn't turn out well," Williams-Darling said. "The race was not too much for me physically, but mentally, yes. Next year I'll be fresh again." The meet at the Stade Louis II stadium is the final event of the athletics season before the male and female athletes of the year are selection. The decision was expected later today with double Olympic champions Kelly Holmes and Hicham El Guerrouj among the leading candidates. Olympic champion Joanna Hayes won the women's 100-metre hurdles, beating countrywoman Jenny Adams by 10-hundredths of a second. Hayes finished in 12.58, with Adams a hundredth ahead of third-placed Jamaican Lacena Golding-Clarke. (AP)
