Athens: One of India's top medal hopes at the 28th Olympic Games, Anju Bobby George, leapt into the final of the long jump event on Wednesday night. India's star long jumper had little trouble crossing the qualifying mark of 6.65 meters. She jumped 6.69 metres in her very first attempt. Anju finished fifth in Group A, which had eight qualifiers. Irina Simagina of Russia topped the group with leap of 6.75 metres. Tatyana Lebedeva of Russia topped Group B with 6.95 metres, which was the best between the two groups. Twelve jumpers have qualified for the final and Anju is placed ninth overall. Giant leap Anju's personal best is 6.74 metres and she has a season's best of 6.71m. Anju became only the second Indian woman athlete to figure in an Olympic final after another Kerala legend P T Usha, who achieved the distinction in the 400m hurdles twenty years ago in the 1984 Olympic Games at Los Angeles. Usha lost by a whisker and the whole country once again waits for a giant leap.
