Local hero Andy Murray came up against Marcos Baghdatis and was quick to take the first set.
But Baghdatis played with heart to come back in the second set indicating that he would be no mere pushover for the Brit.
However Murray was not to be denied a place in the last 16 as he took the next two sets to win the match 7-5, 3-6, 7-5, 6-1.
Serena Williams had a tough game against Jie Zheng losing the first set in the tie-breaker. However she came back to claim the next two sets and seal her place in the last 16 beating the Chinese 6-7, 6-2, 9-7.
Petra Kvitova didn't take long to dismantle her opponent as she won her third round match against Varvara Lepchenko 6-1, 6-0.
Yaroslava Shvedova won a set against Sara Errani without conceding a single point and though the Italian fought hard in the next set Shvedova ultimately triumphed 6-0, 6-4.
Victoria Azarenka dispatched Jana Cepelova swiftly in straight sets winning 6-3, 6-3.
Kei Nishikori could not keep the flag high for Japan as his Wimbledon dream came to an end at the hands of Juan Martin Del Potro who took the match 6-3, 7-6, 6-1.
The day of the Nadal slayer was over as Lukas Rosol fell to Philipp Kohlschreiber in straight sets. Kohlschreiber won the match 6-2, 6-3, 7-6.
Andy Roddick had a convincing first set win over David Ferrer but the Spaniard showed his fighting spirit by taking the next three sets and the match 2-6, 7-6, 6-4, 6-3.
France's Jo-Wilfried Tsonga had a relatively easy passage into the last 16 with a 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 win over Lukas Lacko.
