New York: Janko Tipsarevic reached his first Grand Slam quarterfinal by beating Juan Carlos Ferrero at the U.S. Open on Monday.
The 20th-seeded Serb won 7-5, 6-7 (3), 7-5, 6-2 in 3 hours, 43 minutes.
Tipsarevic will next face his countryman, top-ranked Novak Djokovic. It is the first time in the Open era that two Serbian men have made the quarterfinals of a major tournament.
Tipsarevic did not face a single break point in the last three sets.
The 31-year-old Ferrero has not been back to the quarterfinals at Flushing Meadows since he was the runner-up in 2003. The 105th-ranked Spaniard won the 2003 French Open.
