Joe Root was the early casualty when he fell to Watson for just 16.
Alastair Cook led by example with a good 51.
Jonathan Trott played well for his 49 but fell to Lyon.
Kevin Pietersen looked good in his knock of 26.
Cook's wicket proved to be the turning point of the day.
