New Delhi:Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi were handed first-round byes in their respective doubles matches of the Italian Open in Rome.
Bhupathi and Mark Knowles of Bahamas, seeded fourth, will take on the winners of the match between Spaniards Feliciano Lopez and Fernando Verdasco and the Russian-Croatian pair of Igor Andreev and Ivan Ljubicic in the second round.
Bhupathi has remained static at 11th in the ATP doubles rankings despite he and Knowles pulling out in the second round of last week's Munich Open after the former sustained a groin injury.
Meanwhile, Paes and Australian Paul Hanley, seeded eighth, will be up against the winners of the match between the team of Luis Horna of Peru and Argentine Juan Monaco and the Polish duo of Manisuz Furstenberg and Marcon Matkowski.
Paes has dropped a couple of rungs to 24th in the ATP rankings after he and Hanley were sent packing in the second round of the clay-court tournament in Barcelona last week.
In the WTA rankings, the out-of-action Sania Mirza was down a spot to 33rd in the singles chart but held on to her 19th position in the doubles' list.
