Beijing:
Venus Williams will meet Vera Zvonareva in the semi-finals of the China Open following their respective quarter-final wins over Nadia Petrova and Anabel Medina Garrigues in Beijing on Friday. Number one seed Williams led 6-2, 4-1 when Petrova withdrew with an ankle sprain, while Zvonareva eased past the unseeded Medina Garrigues 6-2, 6-3. Dominant start Williams made a dominant start and her hopes of reaching the semi-finals were boosted when Petrova sprained her ankle in the third game of the match. Williams forced her injured opponent from one side of the court to the other and her booming serve made matters even worse for her fifth seeded opponent. She forced two breaks of serve to take the first set 6-2 in 25 minutes. With her ankle showing little sign of improvement Petrova called for medical attention while trailing 4-1 in the second set. After a short court side consultation Petrova retired from the match and Williams advanced to the semi-finals. In the other quarter-final, number four seed Zvonareva was never stretched by her unseeded opponent and patiently picked her shots on the way to a straight sets victory. The Russian won 6-2, 6-3, defeating her Spanish opponent after just over one hour on court. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
