Montreal:Day three of the Rogers Masters in Montreal saw the entry of two more of the top eight seeds, who had byes in the first round.
But Spaniard Fernando Verdasco made sure it was 8th seed Richard Gasquet's first and last match at this year's tournament. The Frenchman had looked in good form in the first set, as he took it 6-3.
The second was much closer, and went to a tiebreak, Gasquet had a match point on Verdasco's serve, but the Spaniard saved it with a crosscourt volley at the net, and went on to take the set.
Verdasco closed out the match 6-4 in the decider, to set up a third round meeting with either Wayne Odesnik of the United States, or Canada's Frank Dancevic.
Italian qualifier Fabio Fognini caused the biggest shock of the day, the world number 139 took out 13th seed Andy Murray in straight sets.
Murray had beaten Robby Ginepri in the first round, but always looked second best against the 20 year old, who was playing just his 15th career match.
Fognini broke the British number one twice in the first set, taking it 6-2. The presence of brother Jamie in the crowd couldn't inspire Murray, who went down 6-2 6-2.
Murray was returning in this tournament after 12 weeks out with a wrist injury, and says he may now sit out the next two events, in Cincinatti and New Haven, in order to be fit for the US Open.
Fognini will now play either world number 1 Roger Federer or Ivo Karlovic in round 3.
5th seed Andy Roddick is safely through to the last 16 after a straight sets win over Arnaud Clement.
The American, who won the tournament in Washington last weekend, powered to the first set 6-3.
Clement put up a real fight in the second, leading 5-3 in the tiebreak, before Roddick won four consecutive points to clinch victory, the 399th of his career. Roddick now plays either Marcos Baghdatis or Robin Haase in round 3.
David Nalbandian beat 16th seed David Ferrer in their second round meeting. Nalbandian, the world number 26, won the first set on a tiebreak.
The second was far more one sided, and the Argentinian finished the match off in style with an ace, 7-6 6-1 to set up a last sixteen meeting with third seed Novak Djokovic.
