US tennis great Jimmy Connors ended what could be remembered as one of the shortest high-profile coaching assignments after Maria Sharapova dumped him as coach on Wednesday.

The World No.3 WTA star has reportedly severed ties with Connors after just one match. Sharapova lost to upcoming American Sloane Stephens in three sets on Tuesday after a flurry of unforced errors.

Regardless of the result, Connors looked confident of successful alliance with Sharapova , tweeting: "Every good round starts with a bogey - not the start we wanted, so back to work tomorrow."

However, the world's highest paid sportswoman, who has already won all four Grand Slams, had other ideas and fired Connors on Wednesday, according to the report in the Daily Telegraph.

This now leaves the 26-year-old without a coach going into the US Open, that starts August 26.

The 60-year-old Connors, who was aggressive on court, known for his relentless determination during his playing days, had previously coached Andy Roddick for more than a year, back in 2006. However, the association with the big-serving fellow American was not fruitful.
