Wimbledon:
Jennifer Capriati won the first singles match at a rain-interrupted Wimbledon and advanced to the fourth round today. The seventh-seeded Capriati beat Dechy 7-5 6-1 in one hour, 12-minutes on Court one. Capriati was consistent, while Dechy, seeded 25th, had six double-faults and 20 unforced errors. Yesterday was a complete washout, the second of the tournament. Wimbledon opened its gates on the traditional rest day for only the third time in 118 tournaments and "People's Sunday" began with a trademark example of a British queue. The championship was about 120 matches behind schedule after six days, forcing Wimbledon organisers to stage matches on the middle today for the first time since 1997. About 2,000 people camped on the sidewalk overnight and thousands more joined the queue from around dawn to get Centre Court and Court one tickets on a first-come, first-served basis. The prime seats are usually either reserved for high-priced corporate hospitality packages or restricted to a public ballot. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
