No man wanted a place in the second round more than Goran Ivanisevic. The former champion announced that this would be his last tournament before retiring and he promised the fans something special. Injuries had prevented Ivanisevic from defending the men's singles title that he won in 2001 and also the year after that, but he marked his return with a class performance against the number 31 seed, Mikhail Youzhny of Russia. Ivanisevic had lost none of his appetite for the big occasion and took charge on centre court, winning the first two sets 6-3, 7-6 (4). Relaxed and confident, Ivanisevic turned on the style in the third set, finding his touch and range. The fans and the Gods were also on his side, they were smiling down on him when a forehand volley struck the net and looped just over. Ivanisevic sank to his knees and raised his arms to the heavens once more before touching the net in thanks for his good fortune. With Croatia playing England in a crucial match at the European Championships in Portugal, Ivanisevic wanted this match finished in time for kick-off. They had already been interrupted twice because of rain and the Croat was in no mood for any more delays. A sublime drop shot set up match point which he clinched when Youzhny hit a long backhand. Ivanisevic had promised something special, and this 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-2 victory was only the start. (AP)
