Estoril:
French Open champion Gaston Gaudio overcame a mid-match slump to defeat Spaniard Tommy Robredo 6-1, 2-6, 6-1 to take the Estoril Open clay court title in Portugal on Sunday. Robredo, playing in his first final of an injury-hit season, fell apart in the first set, but fought back to level the match. However, the world number five Argentine raced into a 5-0 lead before closing out the match for his sixth title in total on the surface. Robredo, who was celebrating his 23rd birthday, started well by holding serve in the opening game. The Spaniard, who qualified for the final after his semi-final opponent Carlos Moya retired with a shoulder injury, then made countless unforced errors in losing the next six games and the set. Roles were reversed in the second set as Robredo took advantage of some sloppy play by the Argentine, who starts the defence of his French Open title in Paris on the 23rd of May, to level the match by taking the set 6-2. Gaudio, the world number five and winner of two clay court tournaments already this year, upped his game in the decider and raced into a 5-0 lead. The 26-year-old closed out the match with an unreturnable forehand for a 6-1, 2-6, 6-1 in one hour and 48 minutes. The win was Gaudio's third clay court title of the season after winning at Vina del Mar and Buenos Aires earlier this year. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
