Chennai:Fourth seed Paradorn Srichaphan of Thailand overcame a strong challenge from Ramon Delgado of Paraguay in the deciding set to win 4-6 6-1 7-6 (3) in a first round match of the ATP Tour Chennai Open Tennis Championship on Tuesday night. Srichaphan had, on the eve of the tournament, said he would like to take it one match at a time and strive to regain the title, which he lost to Moya in 2004. Srichaphan, who is Asian No. 1 and ranked 42 on the ATP list, as against Delgado's 132, brought his experience and power game into play in the second set. The decider turned out to be a nightmarish affair for Srichaphan as Delgado launched all-out offense. Delgado matched Srichaphan for each point and sent down winner after winner. The decider went on service games till the tenth. However, Srichaphan almost had the turning point in the 11th game with Delgado seeming to lose his grip but he managed to hold his serve on the fourth deuce. With the match drifting to tie-break, Srichaphan brought his experience into play as he led 6-2 with two delicately executed drop volleys from close to the net and then served out for the match. Earlier, qualifier Michal Berrer of Germany came from behind to oust highly-ranked Lukas Dlouhy of Czech Republic 3-6 6-3 6-2. Second seed Radek Stepanek (Czech), ranked 119, managed to beat Spaniard Ivan Navarro Pastor, another qualifier, 6-4 7-6(3). In another match, Rainer Schuettler (Germany) defeated Fernando Vicente (Spain) 6-4, 6-3. (PTI)
