Mason:Serena Williams has withdrawn from next week's Western & Southern Financial Group Women's Open due to a hand injury she suffered at Wimbledon, tournament officials said Tuesday.
Bruce Flory, director for the women's open in this Cincinnati suburb, said Williams told officials Tuesday that she regretted she would not be able to play in the open.
"When we saw Serena with a splint on her hand while watching her sister play in the Wimbledon final, we knew there was a chance she wouldn't be able to play here," said Flory. "She said she really enjoyed herself here last year, appreciated the great crowd support she received and hopes to play here again next year."
Williams, 25, was a semifinalist at the 2006 W&SFG Women's Open.
Flory said the field at the tournament will include Patty Schnyder, Anna Chakvetadze, Sania Mirza, Maria Kirilenko and Akiko Morigami.
