New York:

Belgian Kim Clijsters hammered French 12th seed Mary Pierce 6-3 6-1 to win the US Open on Saturday and claim her first grand slam singles crown. Clijsters served notice from the start she was there to play, breaking Mary Pierce in the first game of the match. She used her superior athletic ability to chase down ball after ball, skidding into trademark splits several times, and made Pierce work for any point she got. The Belgian was too strong, too crisp, too fleet and broke again to essentially seal the first set. Pierce - who had beaten quality opponents in the previous five rounds - was unable to get any of her shots working consistently against Clijsters. Clijsters won 12 of the first 13 points of the second set to go up 3-0. Pierce held serve to make the score a little respectable, but her body language confirmed what everyone in the stands already knew. The match was all but over, and Clijsters was on her way to winning her first major title in grand fashion. When she hit a service winner on the second championship point, she hugged Pierce at the net and then rushed over a photographer's pit and through the stands at Arthur Ashe Stadium to reach her family.
