New York:
Pete Sampras believes he's till good enough to win the US Open despite losing his first-round match at the TD Waterhouse Cup, the last warm-up tournament ahead of the year's final Grand Slam event, to Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu on Tuesday night. The 13-time Grand Slam champion, who reached the final at Flushing Meadows last year, saved two set points in the second set tie-break against 20-year-old Mathieu but eventually lost 6-3, 6-7 (7), 6-4. "The US Open is where you shine and that is where I hope to shine. I'm not the man to beat like I once was. But I'm still one of the favorites," said the 31-year-old former world No 1. "The days of me dominating and being No1 are probably over. My goal is to win another major, and hopefully destiny will be on my side at the Open. It just takes one close win and things can turn around quickly," Sampras said. Sampras said the lack of good results this year was "frustrating" and that his desire to win was as big as ever.(AP)Topics mentioned in this article
