New York:
Roger Federer laughed off an American TV tennis analyst's remark that he wasn't trying to win a US Open tuneup match last week. "That's absurd. I think what she said is a joke," Federer said on Thursday. "I don't take it seriously." CBS commentator Mary Carillo said she thought Federer didn't mind losing to Britain's Andy Murray 7-5, 6-4 in the second round of the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters on August 16. Carillo said she figured Federer wanted to get extra rest ahead of the US Open, which starts on Monday. "He wasn't trying to beat Andy Murray that day," Carillo said during a conference call with reporters. "He went there because he had to, and he played as though he went there because he had to." Federer, the reigning two-time US Open champion, hadn't lost in straight sets in his last 194 matches. The defeat also ended Federer's 55-match winning streak in North America and gave him his earliest tournament exit in two years; he reached the final at his previous 17 events. Asked about Carillo's comments, the top-ranked Federer said: "Because I lose, I tanked?" He spoke to reporters during a promotional appearance with Rafael Nadal for their sponsor Nike. Federer and Nadal hit balls with kids, then swapped shots on a mini-court made of plastic set up on a Manhattan street. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
