Martina Hingis held off the power shots of fourth-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova for a 7-6 (4), 6-3 victory on Friday night in the quarterfinals of the Rogers Cup. Hingis, the former No. 1 in the world and seventh seed, advanced to a semifinal on Saturday against 19-year-old Russian Anna Chakvetadze, a 7-6 (3), 7-5 winner over Shahar Peer of Israel. Dinara Safina, the ninth seed from Russia, and 13th-seeded Ana Ivanovic of Serbia will meet in the other semifinal. The 25-year-old Hingis was the dominant player on the WTA tour in the late 1990s, taking three of the four grand slam tournaments in 1997. She left the tour after the 2002 campaign with chronic foot problems. She won 40 WTA tournaments, including the 1999 and 200 Rogers Cups. She returned to the Tour this season and has climbed to No. 12 in the rankings. Hingis should move higher after a rousing win over No. 7 Kuznetsova before a sellout crowd at 11,437-seat Uniprix Stadium. Each player had three service breaks in the opening set, with Hingis using clever drop shots and rushes to the net to offset Kuznetsova's powerful groundstrokes. Hingis broke service to start the second set and held on with the help of some surprising mistakes from Kuznetsova, who surrendered her serve without winning a point in the final game of the match. The match featured the top two remaining seeds in a tournament that lost most of its top stars to withdrawals and injuries. Safina defeated Nicole Pratt 6-1, 6-0. Shortly before her quarterfinal victory, Safina found out that her brother Marat Safin had been injured in a car accident on Thursday in Cincinnati. Safin, a former US Open and Australian Open champion, has a suspected mild concussion and a stiff neck after his car was struck by another vehicle outside his hotel, a statement on his Web site said.
