London: John Lloyd is Britain's new Davis Cup captain. The former British player succeeds Jeremy Bates, who quit last month after Britain's 3-2 loss to Israel in a Europe/Africa Zone Group I series. "This is a proud moment for me. It was an honor to play Davis Cup and even greater honor to captain the team of your country," Lloyd said on Wednesday. Lloyd, 51, will be in charge for Britain's relegation playoff in September against Ukraine. The loser will drop into Euro/Africa Zone Group II. Lloyd played 51 Davis Cup matches over his career and reached a world ranking high of 21. He was a member of the last British team to reach a Davis Cup final - losing 4-1 to the United States in 1978. Lloyd reached the Australian Open final in 1977, two years before making bigger headlines when he married Chris Evert. They divorced in 1987. Lloyd takes over a British team that has won just two of six matches and lost its last three since Bates took over the captain's role in April 2004. Britain's top player is 19-year-old Andy Murray.
