Umag, Croatia:
Carlos Moya moved closer to winning his fifth Croatia Open title after beating Juan-Pablo Guzman of Argentina 6-1, 6-4 on Friday in the quarterfinals. Guzman only once seriously threatened Moya when he took a 4-2 lead in the second set. But the Spaniard recovered to advance to the semifinals, where Moya will meet the winner of the match between Novak Djokovic of Serbia and Jiri Vanek of the Czech Republic. It was Moya's 38th victory in his 12 Umag tournaments, which he won in 1996, 2001, 2002 and 2003. Filippo Volandri of Italy also advanced, beating Albert Portas of Spain 7-6 (4), 6-4. Volandri, a two-time runner-up, trailed 4-1 in the first set and broke to take a 5-4 lead but still went to a tiebreaker. In the second set, the Italian missed a chance to win the match while leading 5-3 but lost the next game. Before Umag, Volandri hadn't won since the French Open's first round. In previous Croatia Open tournaments, Volandri played in the final in 2003 and '04, and in the semifinals last year. In the semifinals, Volandri faces Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland, who ousted Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina 6-1, 2-6, 6-4. Potro led 3-1 in the third set but Wawrinka came back to draw level and the Argentine smashed the ball and threw a racket, which ended in the gallery. He was penalised for ball abuse and an unsportsmenlike conduct. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
