New York:Thailand's Tamarine Tanasugarn pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the US Open on Friday night when she easily beat ninth-seeded Daniela Hantuchova 6-2, 6-4 with a combination of hard-hitting forehands and backhands and an accurate serve. Tamarine, ranked No 39 in the world, kept Hantuchova running along the baseline throughout the match. That forced the lanky Slovak to commit 33 unforced errors. Tamarine will now face fifth-seeded Amelie Mauresmo of France in the fourth round. Mauresmo beat Russian junior champion Maria Kirilenko earlier Friday. Earlier, women's top seed Kim Clijsters of Belgium beat Russia's Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-3, 6-2 in the third round of the US Open on Friday. Clijsters’ next opponent will be American Meghann Shaughnessy, who beat Kuznetsova's compatriot and number 13 seed Vera Zvonareva on Friday to reach the fourth round. With both Venus and Serena Williams missing the US Open through injury, Kim Clijsters has a great chance to pick up the first Grand Slam title of her career. El Aynaoui survives In the men's draw, No 22 seed Younes El Aynaoui had his hands full against Spanish teenager Rafael Nadal on the Grandstand court. Nadal, tipped by many as a future number one player, was cheered on by the crowd, including countryman and world top 10 golfer Sergio Garcia, as he tested the Moroccan with some surreal stroke play. But in the end, experience overcame youth, and the 32 year old El Aynaoui won the two crucial tie-breaks en route to a 7-6, 6-3, 7-6 victory. El Aynaoui will next meet No.10 seed Jiri Novak in the third round after the Czech player dispensed of American Jan Michael Gambill 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. (AP)
