Wimbledon champion Roger Federer failed to displace Andre Agassi at No 1 in the world rankings after losing to Andy Roddick 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (3) in the semifinals of the Canada Masters in Toronto. Roddick, the sixth seed, will now face David Nalbandian of Argentina in the final after the unseeded 21 year old beat German eighth seed Rainer Schuettler 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. Roddick, who won this event last year, had never beaten Federer in four previous meetings before Saturday's triumph over the Swiss star. Roger Federer and Andy Roddick had different – but equally compelling – reasons for winning their semi-final clash at the Stade du Maurier. For Roddick, it was to avenge his semi-final humiliation to Federer at Wimbledon last month, where the Swiss player swept aside the 20-year old American in straight sets. Federer, in turn, had the opportunity to climb to number one – above Andre Agassi – in the world rankings for the first time in his career. Roddick won the opening set with a single break of serve. He struck some powerful forehands and came to the net more than he had against Federer when he was defeated at Wimbledon. Roddick failed to convert three break points in the second, and was then broken by Federer, who held on to win the set 6-3. In the decider, the American had to come back from 4-2 down before facing a sudden death tie-breaker. Roddick showed few nerves as he dominated proceedings from the beginning of the break. A Roddick forehand winner to go ahead 5-1 in the tiebreak broke the resistance of the Swiss player. The final score was 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (3). It is Roddick's second consecutive appearance in the $2.45 million tournament. He will now face world number 21 David Nalbandian in the final on Sunday. The Argentinian recovered from a set down to beat Australian Open finalist Rainer Schuettler 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. Nalbandian will be playing in his first Masters Series final. (AP)
