Kolkata:
Sunil Kumar Sipaeya continued his dream run to outplay Vishal Uppal in straight sets and set up a men's singles title clash with Manoj Mahadevan. Mahadevan upset second seed Nitin Kirtane in the senior National Grasscourt Tennis Championship today. The 18-year-old Sipaeya took one hour 40 minutes to put it across Delhi's Uppal 7-6 (7/1), 6-4 while sixth seed Mahadevan got the better of Kirtane 7-6 (7/1), 3-6, 6-3 in semi-final outings at the Kolkata South Club lawns. In the ladies' singles semi-final, top seed Maharashtra's Radhika Tulpule prevailed over Sheetal Goutham of Karnataka 6-4, 7-5 in straight sets to book a date with her statemate, third seed Sai Jayalakshmi in the final. Jayalakshmi upstaged second seed Sonal Phadke of the same state 6-2, 6-4 in a one-sided 70-minute encounter. Having accounted for top seed Rohan Bopanna and seventh seed Kamala Kannan on his way to the pre-summit round, Sipayea kept his cool at crucial moments against last year's runners up Uppal to make his maiden entry into the final. Sipaeya, who caused a sensation by winning the national Hardcourt title in 1999 as a 16-year-old, initially looked patchy on his serves but then raised his showing by several notches to run away with the tie-break in the opening set before breaking his opponent in the ninth game of the second set to emerge victorious. Mahadevan fought a 150-minute duel with Maharashtra's Kirtane, who came back strongly in the second set after losing the opener but then looked a bundle of nerves in the decider as he made a series of unforced errors to give away the match.
