Paes, Bhupathi head for showdown

Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi are in for a semi-final showdown in the men's doubles event of Wimbledon.

Wimbledon:Former teammates Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi today headed for a semi-final showdown in the men's doubles event of the Wimbledon tennis championships, registering easy victories with their respective partners. While Paes and David Rikl of Czech Republic entered the semi-finals upsetting third seeded Bryan brothers, Bob and Michael, of the United States, top seeds Bhupathi and Max Mirnyi of Belarus moved into the quarters with a straight sets victory over the Argentinian team of Gaston Eltis and Martin Rodriguez. Paes and Rikl, the fifth seeds, conceded a set against the Bryan brothers before winning 6-2, 6-7 (5/7) 6-2, 6-3. Bhupathi and Mirnyi had an easier time, winning 7-6 (7/4), 6-3, 6-3. They will next meet Martin Damm and Cyril Suk of the Czech Republic for a place in the semi-finals. Paes and Bhupathi, who once formed the number one doubles pair in the world, had played against each other at the quarter-final stage in the French Open also, where Paes and Rikl had emerged victorious against Bhupathi and Mirnyi. Bhupathi also moved into the third round of the mixed doubles event, as he combined with Paola Suarez of Argentina to defeat the American pair of Jared Palmer and Abigail Spears 6-4, 6-7 (2/7), 6-1. Paes and his partner Martina Navratilova are already into the third round of the mixed doubles. Elsewhere in Wimbledon, both Sania Mirza and Somdev Dev Varman crashed out of the championships. Varman made a first round exit, having been beaten by Devin Mullings of Bahamas 7-6 (7/3), 5-7, 6-1 in the boys' section. The 16th seed Sania was ousted from the girls' singles in the second round by Eden Marama of New Zealand, who won 6-2, 3-6, 6-1. Veterans Vijay Amritraj and Anand Amritraj won their over-45 doubles match against Owen Davidson and John Newcombe of Australia 6-2, 6-2. (PTI)
