Sydney:
Jennifer Capriati, who has been named the top seed for next week's Australian Open in the absence of World number one Lindsay Davenport, suffered a stunning upset in the Sydney International event even as Kim Clijsters struggled on court in another match. With Alexandra Stevenson ranked 60 places below Jennifer Capriati, the result of the match was a foregone conclusion. And Capriati obliged by breaking her opponent to go up 4-3 in the first set. But, the 1999 Wimbledon semi-finalist refused to be written off and came up with this winner to break back. Things seemed to get a little tense for Capriati as Stevenson took the first set 7-6. But it was back to business in the second set as the number one seed cruised to a 6-3 win. Capriati was then forced to leave the court to receive treatment on an injury to her right hip and probably had some trouble playing thereafter. She first double faulted and then hit a backhand wide to give Stevenson a day in the sun. Earlier in the day Kim Clijsters had her problems as she lost the first set to Italian Silvia Farina Elia. Things looked even worse for the Belgian when she double faulted to trail 4-2 in the second. But in a dramatic turnaround, she won 10 of the next 11 games to wrap up the match. She now meets fellow Belgian Justine Henin in the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, at the Kooyong Classic in Melbourne, Andre Agassi's return to tennis in 2002 was like an easy workout in the sun. The American showed no signs of rustiness as he powered his way to take the first set 6-3. He wrapped up the match with a 6-2 victory in the second set in just 43 minutes. And to show how relaxed he is, when asked about his ideal 'fantasy match', agassi replied -- "Steffi playing herself in a pair of high heel shoes."Topics mentioned in this article
