Leander Paes and Martina Navratilova have won the mixed doubles title at the Australian Open today. Leander and Martina beat Australia's Todd Woodbridge and Eleni Daniilidou of Greece in straight sets 6-4- 7-5. With today's win, Navratilova has become the oldest woman to win a Grand Slam title. Paes and the 46-year-old legend downed defending champions Kevin Ullyett of Zimbabwe and Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia 6-3, 6-1 in the semi-finals. Navratilova quit playing singles tennis in 1994. Seven years after winning her last title at a Grand Slam tournament, she has now won her 57th Grand Slam title. Martina rejuvenated me Paes, who won his second mixed doubles Grand Slam, said playing alongside Navratilova had rejuvenated his spirits. "I'm going to be 30 this year and I thought I was getting old. You know, Martina has kind of rejuvenated me, rejuvenated my spirit for the game," said the Indian star. "I grew up, my whole childhood, watching Martina play, create history, winning those many Wimbledon titles. I never thought I'd play on the same side of the net as her. It's a real treat to play with her. Her zest for life, her passion for the game is mind-boggling," Paes said of Navratilova, with whom he plans to play the remaining three Grand Slams this year. Navratilova's 57th Slam title made her only the second player in history behind Margaret Court to win singles, doubles and mixed doubles in all the four majors. At 46 years and three months, Navratilova replaced Norman Brookes of Australia as the oldest Grand Slam winner. Brookes was 46 and two months when he won men's doubles in 1924. "When I was growing up, I wanted to be the youngest to win something, not the oldest," Navratilova said. "I certainly didn't think I'd still be playing at this age". (with PTI inputs)
