San Diego:
Belgium's Justine Henin-Hardenne overcame fatigued countrywoman Kim Clijsters 3-6, 6-2, 6-3, to capture the $1 million WTA hardcourt tournament. The third-seeded Henin-Hardenne matched Clijsters for the WTA Tour lead with her fifth title of the year. She has defeated her Fed Cup teammate in three of their last four meetings, including the French Open in June, to pull within 6-8 in the rivalry. "I'm very happy right now. It's been an amazing week," said Henin-Hardenne. Seeded second, Clijsters appeared nearly invincible en route to the final, dropping just 14 games at the La Costa Resort and Spa. And it looked like another blowout after she grabbed a 4-0 lead and coasted to a one-set lead. "I think I started off really well. I just ran out of gas a little bit in the second and third," said Clijsters, who finished the match with a total of 48 unforced errors. After receiving a five-minute injury timeout to treat a recurring blister on her right foot, Henin-Hardenne found her mark with blazing groundstrokes. She mixed in several deft drop shots to level the match. (PTI)Topics mentioned in this article
