New Delhi:Sania Mirza on Wednesday won her first round match at the French Open against Alberta Brianti, beating the Italian 6-1, 6-1.
Mirza was under pressure thanks to some poor form on clay and in the past at Roland Garros, but it didn't show on court as she came out all guns blazing against Brianti.
The 20-year-old produced winners with her trademark forehand as she raced to a 3-0 lead.
The Hyderabad Hurricane literally ran through Brianti. Sania's powerful strokes proved too much for the 87th-ranked Italian who was completely outplayed. Sania went on to win the first set 6-1 in 25 minutes.
The second set also headed the same way as the first as Sania came up with more forehand winners to race to a 4-0 lead.
Brianti, who had won the only previous encounter between the two, did try and fight back - but it proved to be of little use as Sania continued to dominate.
The 50th-ranked player's new coach Spaniard Gabriel Urpi who has worked with former women's singles champion Arantxa Sanchez Vicario would have been pleased with her performance.
The misery ended for Brianti in just 52 minutes after Sania came up with yet another forhand winner.
In the end the difference of 54 points won by Mirza compared to just 30 by Brianti showed in the scoreline as well. The 20-year-old won her first match at Roland Garros, but her next one isn't going to be as easy - she faces seventh-seed Ana Ivanovic in the second round.
