South Africa's biggest stars of the day were Faf du Plessis (left) and AB de Villiers who hit centuries to carry their team to the cusp of a win.
Du Plessis completed his fifty from 142 balls and was instrumental in seizing the initiative for his team.
By them time he reached his century, it appeared Proteas will become the team with the highest successful run-chase in the history of Tests, West Indies' 418 against West Indies being the best.
The turning point was du Plessis' wicket. India ran the centurion out on 134 with South Africa on 442.
What came as a surprise to many, Vernon Philander and Dale Styen opted to play out India from hereon though the target was in touching distance.
Team India was not complaining however as both sides now head to Durban for the second contest.
