The hurt was more painful because South Africa had made a solid start courtesy Graeme Smith and Alviro Petersen.
While Smith (in pic) was struck on his body early into the innings, he managed to resist Indian pacers.
At the other end, Hashim Amla too played a responsible knock and his 36 added to India's frustration. From 118/1 at tea though, the script changed.
Amla was removed by Ishant Sharma early into the final session of play.
The bowler struck in the next delivery, removing Jacques Kallis on 0.
Zaheer Khan then - once again - trapped Smith LBW. This was the 14th occasion in international cricket that the Indian pacer had dismissed Smith.
Mohammad Shami contributed with two wickets.
South Africa eventually managed to meander their way to 216/6 at close of play, thanks to Faf du Plessis (in pic) and Vernon Philander.
Earlier in the day, Indian batsmen too found going tough. Resuming on 255/5, skipper MS Dhoni fell on 19 to Morne Morkel.
Vernon Philander removed Rahane on 47 and his three strikes in the opening session on Day 2 helped South Africa bowl India out on 280.
