Moscow:
Zenit St. Petersburg fired coach Vlastimil Petrjela on Wednesday following the team's 1-0 loss to CSKA Moscow in the Russian Cup. The premier league club's board of directors put assistant coach Vladimir Borovichka in temporary charge. Petrjela, a 52-year-old Czech who became the Russian league's first foreign coach in 2002, was already in a shaky position before Wednesday's defeat. Sunday's 4-1 loss to visiting Spartak Moscow left his team in ninth place in the Russian championship after six games. It has eight points, six fewer than co-leaders Rubin Kazan and Tom. Petrjela had led Zenit to this season's UEFA Cup quarterfinals, its best ever European showing. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
