New Delhi:
Riding on the crest of the successes of the national teams at senior and junior levels, Indian Hockey supremo K P S Gill today advanced the Indian Hockey Federation's elections by four months. Gill himself is a candidate for a third term in office in the IHF's elections, due in May, will now be held on January 29 in Guwahati. "With a crammed international calendar in the coming months, we decided to get the business of elections out of the way so that the work of preparing teams for various tournaments goes on uninterrupted," Gill said. Asked why far off Guwahati was chosen as the venue for the elections, Gill said "we want to take hockey to far corners of the country and this is part of the process". The year 2001 has been particularly good for Indian hockey as the junior team won the World Cup in Hobart and the senior squad won the inaugural Champions Challenger Trophy in Kuala Lumpur to regain its place among the elite Hockey teams in the world.
