Munich:
Germany gave VfL Wolfsburg defender Alexander Madlung his first callup on Monday to bolster its defence for two upcoming European Championship qualifiers. The 24-year-old defender was added to the roster named last week because injuries have sidelined all four World Cup central defenders. Germany plays Ireland on Saturday and San Marino four days later. Madlung is regarded as talented but undisciplined. Last season at Hertha Berlin, he was slapped with three red cards in a month. "He is strong in challenges and in the air and has a lot of potential," Germany coach Joachim Loew said. Madlung had a bonus over other players with Germany experience because he played together at Berlin with Arne Friedrich - one of the few World Cup defenders healthy at the moment. Madlung is the only rookie on a team composed mostly of the World Cup players. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
