After attaining three wins in his first three games as England Coach, Steve McClaren was the toast of England. But football's a fickle game and reputations can be won and lost in a matter of hours. That's just what seems to have happened to Sven Goran Eriksson's successor after a goalless draw to Macedonia and an embarrassing defeat to Croatia in the span of four days. On Wednesday, England battled Croatia in Zagreb and playing a 3-5-2 formation for the first time since the days of Kevin Keegan, the cracks in the English defence were evident from very early on. In fact, Paul Robinson, who's now replaced David James as England's number one keeper had to muster all his skill to keep Croatia from getting on the score sheet. However, the deadlock was finally broken after 70 minutes, as England, who looked content on sitting back and defending, were be made to pay by Da Silva giving Croatia a well deserved 1-0 lead. Robinson had had an exceptional night till then too keep the score at 1-0, but then his worst nightmare came true as a harmless backpass ended up as an own goal for England. The win means that Croatia kept intact its record of never having lost to England at home, but beyond that it means a lot of thinking and more hardwork for McClaren and his men.Topics mentioned in this article
