Turkey draws 2-2 with Czech Republic

Substitute Umit Karan scored twice in as many minutes and Turkey rallied to draw 2-2 with the Czech Republic in a friendly on Wednesday. Karel Poborsky put the Czech Republic ahead from the penalty spot in the 21st minute after Milan Baros was fouled by Turkey goalkeeper Rustu Recber. Turkey went 2-0 up in the 62nd when Jiri Stajner shot past Recber on a cross from Marek Jankulovski. Karan was brought on eight minutes from the end of the game and he netted his first goal in the 87th. The substitute's 90th-minute equaliser sent the crowd at Ataturk Stadium wild. "We're not satisfied that we lost a win at the end - our opponent increased its quality at the final stages," Czech coach Karel Bruckner said. "We were taken by surprise at the end". Wide shot The 11th-ranked Turkey, which didn't qualify for the World Cup and is preparing for Euro 2008, missed a chance in the seventh minute when Tuncay Sanli shot wide. A minute before halftime, Hasan Sas' right-footed shot from the edge of the area was saved by Czech Republic goalkeeper Petr Cech. Turkey coach Fatih Terim replaced three of his starters for the second half and substitute Yildiray Basturk's shot was saved by Cech in the 49th. Orhan Ak's 10-meter shot four minutes later was blocked by Cech. "It was a good preparation for us," Terim said. "We'll do our best to qualify for Euro 2008". Captain Tomas Galasek, defender Zdenek Grygera, striker Jan Koller, and midfielders Pavel Nedved, David Jarolim and Vladimir Smicer were all missing from the Czech squad.
