Birmingham:
Australian pace spearhead Glenn McGrath injured his right ankle in a warmup Thursday and was ruled out of the second cricket test against England. McGrath stepped on a cricket ball in the practice nets less than two hours before play was scheduled to start. The 35-year-old fast bowler had to be helped from the practice area and, after an assessment by team medical staff, was taken to hospital for further tests. "Glenn has rolled his right ankle in the early stage of the warmup. He was in considerable pain and had minimal movement," said Australian team physiotherapist Errol Alcott. "We've sent him to hospital for x-rays." McGrath took nine wickets in Australia's 239-run win in the first test at Lord's, including a five-wicket haul in the first innings that put the tourists in control of the match. He won the man-of-the-match honors at Lord's, where he lifted his career total to 508 test wickets. He's one of only four bowlers to have surpassed the 500 wicket barrier in tests. Michael Kasprowicz was confirmed as McGrath's replacement for the second test. Australian captain Ricky Ponting said losing McGrath was disappointing, but Kasprowicz had taken five wickets in the tour match against Worcestershire on the weekend and was in good form. Australian team physiotherapist Errol Alcott said McGrath's condition would be monitored throughout the day. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
