New Delhi:
The 37th Northern Indian Ladies Golf tournament teed off to a sunny start at the Delhi Golf Club today. A premier ladies golf event, the Northern India is one of the seven regional championships played in the country, and points from each of these events determines the players' selection for the national team. Bright talent Not surprisingly, there are 111 entries this year, which included four women golfers from Iran and one from Zambia. The talent on show includes is 21-year-old Irina Brar, who dominated women's golf two years ago before a back injury forced her to miss an entire year. But Irina seems to be continuing from where she left off. She won the first event she played on her comeback, and started this tournament with a bang--setting a course record of five under par. Limited options But the flipside is that while the numbers have increased, it is a case of nowhere really to go. India only has a ladies amateur circuit, unlike other Asian countries like Taiwan, Korea and Japan. However, India's first and only professional woman golfer Simi Mehra is a source of inspiration for some players who are ready to go west and try their luck at the hard life of a professional player. While many believe that the number of women participating these days has shot up considerably from what it used to be a decade earlier, the standard hasn't changed much. That is a worrying factor that needs to be addressed soon, if Indian women golfers are to come at par with their male counterparts.Topics mentioned in this article
