Marseille: Olivier Rochus of Belgium upset two-time Grand Slam winner Yevgeny Kafelnikov, 7-6 (5), 6-4, eliminating the Russian from the first round of the Open 13 on Wednesday. The unseeded Rochus faces up-and-coming French teen Richard Gasquet in the second round. Kafelnikov, the sixth seed and winner of the tournament in 2001, was one of five seeded players ousted on Wednesday. France's Nicolas Escude did away with Jiri Novak, seeded second - 6-2, 6-1. Morocco's Younes El-Aynaoui, the fifth seed, lost to Sweden's Jonas Bjorkman, 6-2, 6-4, while Max Mirnyi of Belarus downed Spain's Tommy Robredo, seeded eighth, 6-7 (6), 6-1, 7-6 (5). Cyril Saulnier of France upset compatriot Fabrice Santoro, the seventh seed - 2-6, 6-4, 6-1. Two other Frenchmen - Sebastien Grosjean and Olivier Mutis - came out on top. Top-seeded Roger Federer of Switzerland advanced to the second round after Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia withdrew with an injury. Federer had won the first-set tiebreaker, 7-6 (3). In other play, Adrian Voinea of Romania beat Australia's Wayne Arthurs, 6-4, 7-6 (4), while Finland's Jarkko Nieminen outlasted Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (1). (AP)
